Casey started in 1980 at Joseph's Lounge and then moved to Texas in 1988 and worked at Molson Breweries. In 1992 he moved back to Kansas city and started working for Michael Burnes at The Dixie Belle. Then in 2000 he worked for Sidekicks, in 2001 started bartending at Buddies, 2003 he was working at Balanca's and Sidekicks. In 2004 he was working at The Backdoor and finally moved to Missie B's in 2005 where you find him slinging drinks at the upstairs bar.
"I can't get rich; I can't make a living, But I sure do something for the neighborhood women. I wake up every morning with a knocking at my door; You can't keep 'em waiting when they're beggin' for more."
"Back! Back!" I hollered to my hound, "You're supposed to keep 'em from coming around." I used to think they were after me but they're just after my recipe, for Good Brown Gravy, Good Brown Gravy, i said Good Brown Gravy, Good Brown Gravy
"You can sop it with a biscuit, you can eat it from a pan, You can lick it off your fingers when it's running down your hand. If I could get a backer I could cause a big comotion I'd put it on the market, call it "Biscuit Lotion."
"Well, granny told my momma 'bout the power that it had; Good Brown Gravy is the way she got my dad. They tried to get me in the Army, tried get me in the Navy, Just to get the secret of my Good Brown Gravy."
Chris has been at Missie B's almost five years and has earned the reputation of being fun, frisky, and shirtless. Having also worked at Sidekicks he enjoys a wide range of music and a good time out with friends. His favorite drink is whisky and Orange Juice and enjoys his shots of Yukon Jack. He has been a member of the KC Waves gay swim team and have done some traveling around earning medals in both the Out Games in Paris, France and the Gay Games in Cologne, Germany. He is very active and currently in school studying English Literature and Psychology.
Darren Huffman, aka "Pee Wee", grew up in a small town in Kansas called Lecompton. Some of his interests range from video games to painting, scary movies, and a love of zombies. If you don't catch him out selling his yummy Jell-o shots, you'll probably see him watching a Dirty Dorothy show or gettin' down on the dancefloor. Favorite shot? Ice 101. As far as drinks go, anything with pineapple (or a David Doyle surprise!).
David Doyle, or as his friends know him, "Cottage Cheese Ass", has been working at Missie B's since 2003. He has been a card carrying member of NAMBLA since 1975 and can be found in his off hours hanging out at the local grade school. When not slinging drinks at Missie B's he pursues his full time career as a rat and tarantula farmer. He has an undying love of mice, rats, and spiders of any kind and always appreciates customers who go out of their way to bring him in one of the furry little creatures. His favorite quote is "Stick it in my trunk" and can often be heard saying it repeatedly through out the night. You wouldn't know it by looking at him but he enjoys lots of weight losing activities to help get rid of all the ding dongs, ho-hos, and numerous other baked goods he consumes. He can be found almost every night behind his stage bar.
Steven Nguyen as "DJ Chef Nguyen" works hard to serve you the freshest and familiar beats. He's all about seeing people have fun for what he lays out on the table (or in this case, the dance floor).
DJ Chef Nguyen got his start by working for KJHK 90.7FM in 2007, where he hosted a special program called "Club Soda". Two years later, he transformed the 2 hour radio show into a 1 hour podcast, which can be found on his Facebook page. Along with "Club Soda", he hosted Pride night on Wednesdays in Lawrence, KS from 2008 to 2009.
He started working at Missie B's in April 2010. You can find him upstairs "setting his kitchen on fire" with domestic and classic remixes. Can you withstand the heat?
Fred worked for Nichol's Restaurant for 13 years before joining the Missie B's family. He has now been with us since 2006. He loves dancing around bonfires, working hard, and playing hard.... just like a true Scorpio. Fred has been with his husband Henry for 17 years and his second husband Xander for 6 months. His favorite thing to drink is home made beer that his husband Henry makes. If that is not available he heads for Amstel or a Long Island Ice Tea followed up by a shot of American Honey.
Jan has been the fearless den mother to Missie B's patrons and staff for sixteen years! Tequilla is her favorite shot, and gin is her favorite cocktail base, but please, never feed her after midnight! Her hobbies include weekly darts, Farmville and Farm-town on Facebook, and snuggling with her 3 dogs and 1 kitty. She wants to thank everyone who has been with her through the years making Missie B's what it is today!
Jeromy was born in Albany MO, May 29, 1976. He grew up in Satanta KS, where he graduated and worked as a farmer, moving back to the Kansas City area in 2000.
Jeromy enjoys jogging, painting abstract art, and is a collector of vinyl records.
Jeromy joined the Missie B's family in 2009 as a bar back and bartender. He is thankful for everyone and is reminded of a quote of Michael Burnes "Without you, there would be no us".
Laron's sign is Cancer and he loves long walks in the park... LOL! Just kidding! Laron has worked for The Good Samaritan Project for five years and has a degree in early childhood development. He loves to make people smile. Party time!!!
My name is Marbelle Redd and I started doing drag at Missie B's in October of 1994 and I have been here ever since. I still do drag (Bette Midler impersonation) once a year for the Bartender Review which is always on Thanksgiving. I bartend most nights of the week and I am also part of the management team. I focus on advertisement in publications and my work computer is a 27" flat panel Mac (sweet!!). I am a huge bette midler fan, so of course my favorite movie is any movie that Bette has been in, including her uncredited cameo in the movie "Hawaii" and her French-Canadian art film "The Thorn". Need more info? Find me at Missie B's.
Michaels' adventures as a young adult started in the mid 1960's when he served his country in Viet Nam. During his tour in Viet Nam he was held as a POW and his service there earned him a Purple Heart. He returned from Viet Nam in 1968 and began his life as a business owner.
In the early 1970's he opened a restaurant on 40 highway at the Green Crest Motel. A few years later he went to San Francisco where he opened a restaurant in the Castro District just around the corner from Harvey Milk's camera shop. He returned to Kansas City in 1980 at which time he opened a little diner at 63rd and Troost called Mikes' Kitchen.
The Kon Tiki was his first gay bar which he opened in the mid 80's. After the Kon Tiki closed he went on to open the Dixie Belle (located on 31st Street). He then moved the Dixie Belle Saloon to Main Street. While owning and operating the Dixie Belle Saloon, he opened Mari's Saloon and Grill on Grand (currently Balanca's) as well as Missie B's and was successful in running all three businesses at the same time. He then was instrumental in helping Johnny Parks move the Dixie Belle Saloon across the street which became Dixie Belle Warehouse and was also successful for a number of years. Today he is focused and committed to operating Missie B's and providing the best nightclub experience possible.
These are the financial successes that Michael has had, but there is more to his success story which really is a measure of his character. He has over the past 30 years given back to the community through beer busts, benefits, and various other fundraisers. In the early days of the Dixie Belle when HIV meds were not approved or easily accessible to the general public, he kept them at the bar for those who needed but could not obtain them. For many years, and even to this day Michael is a hospice volunteer. Michael Burnes exemplifies success in every aspect of his life through his incomparable business sense, his kindness, generosity, and genuine love of his extended family and community.
